Probate Court Can Be Confusing

When handled by an inexperienced lawyer or someone who is unfamiliar with Georgia probate laws, probate court can be extremely costly. Whether contemplating an estate plan, confronting legal issues related to a loved one’s incapacity or dealing with the administration of a loved one’s estate, it is important to consult a knowledgeable lawyer who can guide you through the legal process efficiently and effectively.

At Shawn P. Hammond and Associates, attorney Shawn Hammond is dedicated to protecting the rights and interests of clients and their families. When you come to him for assistance with a probate court matter, such as creating a will or handling an estate, you can have peace of mind knowing that you are working with an experienced probate lawyer.

Serving Individuals And Families Facing Probate Court

Shawn provides experienced, attentive and individualized legal services for clients throughout Richmond, Columbia and Burke counties and the surrounding areas. He offers sound legal counsel in a range of probate court matters, including:

  • Wills: Your last will and testament tells loved ones exactly what your final wishes are for distributing inheritance to loved ones or excluding certain beneficiaries from your will. Your will can be as simple or complex as you wish, establishing trusts for minor children, designating subsequent charitable beneficiaries, naming guardians for minor children and offering other unique features.
  • Adult guardianships: When a loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia or another mental illness, it is difficult to watch as the disease takes over. There comes a point when it is necessary for someone else to step in and handle important medical concerns (such as making appointments, distributing medication or talking with doctors), daily care needs and other basic needs of the individual. Unless a power of attorney has already been designated, the court must approve or appoint a guardian who can handle important issues affecting the day-to-day life of the individual. Shawn can help you through the court process of establishing an adult guardianship.
  • Estates: Before inheritance can be distributed to beneficiaries following a loved one’s death, their estate must be properly administered in accordance with Georgia’s probate laws – regardless of whether there was a will. In the probate and estate administration process, the will is validated, assets and debts are inventoried, creditors and beneficiaries are properly notified, final debts are paid and final income and estate taxes are filed. It is not until the end of the estate process that assets are finally distributed to the heirs named in the will (or in accordance with Georgia intestate laws).

Shawn provides clients with a full range of estate planning and probate services from the office in Evans. While these issues are complicated, he can make things a little better for you going forward.
